Meet Dr Rudy Sinharay, a consultant respiratory physician at the Lindo Wing, St Mary’s Hospital

Dr Rudy Sinharay is a consultant respiratory physician who specialises in the management of a broad range of respiratory conditions. He has a particular interest in lung cancer screening and is the lead clinician for the lung cancer service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. We talk to Rudy about his role, his research and his private practice at the Lindo Wing, St Mary’s Hospital.

What is your role at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust?

I am a consultant respiratory and general medical physician at St Mary’s Hospital. I lead the Trust’s lung cancer service and the multidisciplinary team – the team of experts who work together to plan the best treatment for each patient. I also run clinics for common breathing problems such as coughs, breathlessness, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). For diagnosis, I use advanced tests such as bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) which give clear answers and guide treatment.

I also hold an academic appointment as honorary clinical senior lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.

Please can you tell us about your particular interest in lung cancer screening?

I have a particular interest in lung cancer screening and lead the lung cancer service at St Mary’s Hospital. Screening with a low‑dose CT scan (that gives off a very low dose of radiation) aims to detect lung cancer earlier, when treatment is most effective and survival rates are significantly higher.

The NHS is currently offering targeted lung health checks for people aged 55 to 74 who are eligible.

What were the top‑line findings of your research on the impact of air pollution on patients with COPD and ischaemic heart disease?

Our research looked at the impact of air quality during a two-hour walk. We compared walking in Hyde Park, where the air is cleaner, with walking along Oxford Street, which has heavy traffic and pollution. The study involved people aged 60 and over – including those who were healthy, and those living with COPD or heart disease.

Our study found that breathing in traffic pollution during a short walk can cancel out or even reverse the positive effects of exercise on your heart and lungs. This includes changes that make arteries stiffer and reduce lung function. These effects were strongest in people with COPD or heart disease.

What would a typical consultation look like at the Lindo Wing?

At the Lindo Wing, care is consultant‑led from diagnosis to discharge, in a calm, private setting with rapid access to imaging, procedures and support from across the Trust’s specialties.

Your first consultation usually includes a detailed chat about your symptoms and medical history, a review of any previous test results, and some focused checks such as breathing tests (lung function or spirometry) and chest scans. If needed, we may arrange more specialised tests such as bronchoscopy or an endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS).

After this, you’ll receive a personalised care plan tailored to your needs.

The Lindo Wing is embedded within St Mary’s Hospital, giving patients the advantages of a leading NHS teaching hospital (major trauma, critical care and subspecialist teams) plus the privacy and convenience of a dedicated private unit.
