Gallbladder removal surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy)

About the procedure

Gallbladder removal, also known as a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, is a type of keyhole surgery that removes the gallbladder. It is commonly carried out to treat gallstones that cause discomfort or lead to infections such as cholecystitis. As this is a minimally invasive technique, most patients experience less pain, recover more quickly, and go home sooner compared to traditional open surgery.

Who might need it?

Gallstones are small, solid lumps that can develop in the gallbladder, most often made of cholesterol. They’re very common and many people don’t realise they have them because gallstones don’t always cause symptoms. For some people, however, gallstones can lead to discomfort or pain, usually felt in the abdomen and they can develop a fever and jaundice. You might need surgery if the pain or other symptoms persist, in order to prevent further issues.

What to expect

Here are the steps you’ll go through when having gallbladder surgery:

Consultation: You will meet with one of our expert surgeons, who will discuss your symptoms, carry out a detailed examination and explain the procedure.

Preparation: Your consultant will explain everything you need to do before your surgery.

Procedure: You will have a general anaesthetic and then your surgeon will make a small incision near your belly button and two or three tiny incisions on the right side of your abdomen. A laparoscope, a thin tube with a light and camera, is then inserted through one of the incisions. The camera sends images to a screen, allowing your surgeon to see inside your abdomen clearly and remove your gallbladder without needing a large incision.

Once your gallbladder is removed, the small incisions are closed with stitches and covered with dressings. The operation usually takes around an hour.

Aftercare: With keyhole surgery, you can often go home the same day, and the recovery period is usually two weeks - after which most people feel comfortable returning to work.
