Maternity care at the Lindo Wing

Trusted for generations, we have been supporting women and birthing people to bring babies into the world since 1937 and have an international reputation for maternity care.

As part of the 2023 Care Quality Commission national inspection programme, we have retained an outstanding rating for our maternity services at the Lindo Wing.

Upon arrival, we will welcome you into our comfortable labour ward or birth centre, dependant on your preferences.

Our private ensuite rooms are designed to make you feel at home; providing a calm, comfortable environment to focus on your birth. All meals are made to order on site by our team of talented chefs and you can enjoy a celebratory high tea to welcome your new arrival.

If you and your family would like more space, we can provide upgraded facilities to deluxe rooms or suites and we can work together to develop a bespoke package for you if there is any other service you would like.

We also provide a secure, supervised nursery, so you can enjoy some rest whilst remaining confident that your baby is being well cared for.

Please just ask your midwife during your admission if you would like to use this service.

Is midwifery-led care right for me?

Midwifery-led care is only suitable for those who are expecting an uncomplicated birth (this includes both NHS eligible patients and overseas patients) and who's birthing preference is a vaginal birth.

A good guide to whether midwifery-led care may be right for you is if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • Expecting a single baby
  • Aged between 18 and 39 years old, please note, if you are over 39 years old you may still be eligible for midwifery-led care.
  • Body mass index (BMI) of between 18 and 30.
  • Currently having an uncomplicated pregnancy
  • Not having a previous caesarean section.

If any of these conditions change during your pregnancy, we will support a smooth transition to obstetric-led care with one of our consultants. Additional fees will apply for this.

Please ask your midwife for more information about the package, and whether it could be a suitable option for your birth plan, during your admission.

Safety and back up support

You can have complete peace of mind regarding the safety of you and your baby whilst in our care.

We have an experienced consultant obstetric team and 24-hour consultant anaesthetic cover on hand for us to call on at any time during pregnancy labour, birth or the postnatal period if any complications arise that need additional input.

If you choose our midwifery-led care package, you are linked with a consultant obstetrician who you will meet during your pregnancy to refer to should any concerns arise. A consultant obstetrician will also be available during labour and birth in case of emergency, providing you with complete assurance of safety and clinical expertise.

If required at any point, we have world-class neonatal services at St Mary’s hospital with back up support services should you or your baby need any additional attention.

Support for the whole family

We involve birth partners at all stages of care, and they are particularly encouraged to attend appointments and antenatal classes if you choose to opt for them. They are also welcome to stay overnight after the birth.

We believe it’s important that older children don’t feel left out as you prepare for the new arrival. Our team can advise you on maintaining relationships with both your baby and your other children. This includes involving older siblings in the planning of the baby’s arrival.

Taking the next step

We aim to provide an exceptional standard of service where your wellbeing, safety, security and comfort are always our top priority.

For the duration of your stay our expert team will ensure your birth and recovery is safe, personalised and discreet.
