Initial enquiry:

You can contact us to schedule an initial consultation with one of our expert consultants.

Consultation:

At the initial consultation any questions you have will be answered, and your suitability for the procedure will be assessed. If the gastric balloon is suitable for you, you will be able to book an appointment to place the balloon in your stomach.

Placement of the balloon:

During your appointment, you will swallow a small capsule connected to a thin tube which contains the deflated Allurion gastric balloon. An X-ray will be taken to ensure the capsule is correctly positioned in your stomach. Once confirmed, the balloon will be filled with 550ml of water, expanding to the size of a grapefruit. The tube will then be removed, and a second X-ray will be performed to ensure the balloon is full and positioned in the appropriate area of your stomach.

Monitoring and advice:

You will participate in a dietitian-led lifestyle programme designed to promote healthy eating habits. This programme will include guidance on portion control and provide comprehensive nutritional advice to support your weight loss journey

End of treatment:

After 16 weeks, a time-activated release valve will deflate the balloon, allowing it to pass naturally through your gastrointestinal tract. This process occurs without the need for a removal procedure. The Allurion weight loss programme will support you for six months, providing you with the best opportunity to achieve your weight loss goals and maintain your progress.

Frequently asked questions:

How does the Allurion balloon work?

The gastric balloon is a medical device which assists with weight loss. It is a soft balloon filled with liquid that sits in the stomach. The gastric balloon promotes a feeling of fullness and reduces food intake and typically remains in the stomach for 16 weeks before it passes through naturally.

Is the balloon easy to swallow?

The deflated balloon capsule is designed to be easy to swallow. People who may have difficulty swallowing it can be assisted by their consultant, who will guide the balloon into place, without endoscopy or anaesthesia.

Will I have any dietary restrictions during or after the programme?

There are some dietary recommendations to follow before the placement of the balloon and during the first week as you adapt to it. Your nutritionist will be with you every step of the way, offering support and guidance. They will create personalised eating plans tailored to your specific needs and progress. Additionally, you will gain valuable knowledge about food and nutrition that will set you up for long-term success.

How is the balloon removed?

After approximately 16 weeks, a time-activated release valve automatically opens, allowing the balloon to empty and pass out naturally through the gastrointestinal tract.

How much weight can I lose?

On average, patients will lose approximately 10-15% (1, 2) of their starting total body weight but individual results will vary widely.
